I met Scott a.k.a 'The Brave One' today...

Lisa: I met Scot a.k.a 'The Brave One' today. What a nice mellow fellow, very cool, very kind.
He is employed 'part-time' by ECC Youth Service, Where he specialises in 'Detached Youth Work' which is taking youth work to young people on their turf, rather than asking them to come into a 'youth centre'. This basically involves meeting with groups of young people where ever they congregate, on the streets in car parks and parks mainly. They work with them to build relationships so they can identify their needs & discuss issues that effect them.
Scott says "where necessary we challenge their behaviour/attitudes and show them ways in which they can contribute positively to their community."

Scott: As you may know as well as being a Youth Worker I am also a Graphic Designer, who paints wall murals using emulsion and spray paint, my work is often associated with Graffiti Art. To gain my degree, I wrote my dissertation centred around the subject of visual languages, Graffiti, and youth sub-cultures, so I understand my subject and the issues that surround it very well. Since leaving University, I have painted large-scale murals, and run workshops with Youth Groups, in schools and for many different art initiatives.
In 2001, I completed the Eastern Arts Board - Artist in Residence Course and set up my own business called Brave Arts. Please check out the website. http://www.braveone.co.uk/
Teaching Spray can Art / Graffiti Art young people are often interested in taking part in our form of painting, often because of the stigmas attached to our form of art. Most young people are attracted to the element of rebellion painting with a spray can denotes. They are attracted to the fact that painting in graffiti style is something close to being a punishable act, or forbidden form of creativity. These are the defining factors of our work and through this understanding we find we can successfully connect with young people.
========
Lisa: He showed me the Pavillian at Clements Hall (in the field) where he had taught some local kids to do graffitti, it was great.
Before they set to work on the Graffiti Art the place was covered with random graffiti, they did the Graffiti Art in the summer last year, six months ago, and it remains untouched.
Scott had an insight into youths minds, we spoke about this for a bit.
We looked through his portfolios and he has done lots of work with youths all over Essex.
He does like working with youth but would like to work on commissions too to put some variety in his practice. He has done a cd cover before, we had a bit of a pooling of ideas and after seeing that he had done two walls on the side of a Connect shop, said I can see graffitti being used on more establishments on the outside and the in, as he has used perspective in his picture so that it looks like you can step in the picture I think this could make buildings look really interesting.
I can also see his sort of work working in swimming pools, ice rinks, kids play areas such as kids kingdom. As murals on cafe walls, for a cool image.
