Dear Debbie....
Hi Debbie,
How would you start off as an artist, I have a Foundation diploma and an A-level, I guess it's producing art than can be exhibited, approaching galleries.
Have you got any advice on this?
yours sincerely,

Hi Lisa,
Talent is one thing, but believing in your ability is another.
When you say that you want to start up as an artist, you need to identify what it is exactly that you want. Is it to exhibit in galleries? Produce art to sell, win competitions or just follow an artistic lifestyle? Take a while to think about this and an answer will come to you.
Once you have decided what it is you want from your art then focus on achieving those goals. For example: If you want your art to be shown in galleries, then start contacting a few and don't be put off, but why stop at galleries? What about libraries, local shops, offices.
The aim here is to get your name and your work to a wider audience.

Any formal education in art is interesting because you are being taught someone else's ideas; again though that is what it is, someone else's ideas. I don't think neccessarily that any education in art is going to give you much headway in any desires you seek as an artist. Achieving a degree in art for example means you have been educated to a certain standard but then what, a Masters? Doctorate? Great if you want academia, but not totally neccessary for an artist.
By all means learn, learn and learn drawing skills, they are the backbone (in my opinion) of a competent artist. Visit galleries, do life drawing.Read books, watch dvd's, anything that inspires and interests you, get hold of and use.
We can always learn something new.
