B.A.T Gallery

Memories from working as a Volunteer at the B.A.T Gallery…..
(Temporary Gallery at the Eastgate shopping centre, Basildon from April to October)
By Lisa Horner

It was a good experience working at the Gallery, not only did I enjoy local, and some famous art. I also got to exhibit my art, as I’m fairly new as an exhibiter, this was confidence building.
What was lovely was the reactions from the public. There was a display of art from a ‘special’ school. One lady came in and announced to me that her son’s work was on display, he went to this school; you could see she was so proud.
The children had done their pictures in the style of Jackson Pollock, with splashes and dots everywhere.

On one occasion I saw this man who was going around touching the paintings, and being totally absorbed by them. I believe he really had a moving experience, the fact that what was in the Gallery was so diverse made it more sensational for him.
People commented to me or wrote comments expressing how Basildon needed this gallery, one person wrote in the comment book:-

'This is an oasis in the midst of a cultural desert’.

We had sculptures made from many sorts of materials. One particular wooden sculpture was much loved, it was a little wooden pig, at one time it had to go and be fixed because somebody accidentally knocked it and we got comments in the book saying ‘Where’s the pig!’ Quite a few people asked where it was.
I’m sure the gallery is missed, and people are looking forward to the next one.
